A year ago I asked how people define Web 2.0. Now that a year has gone by, I wonder what the perception of Web 3.0 will be. The word may be hype, or even a buzz word, but it will be used as a business term. Using your personal opinion (and not citing an expert), what do you think will be the definition and components of Web 3.0?
Definition of Web 3.0 Continued from Page 1:
Shawn Adrian - I'm guilty of mocking buzz word heavy web sites and blogs for using the words Web 2.0, and just as guilty of sprinkling sales meetings and client conversations with the same term, touting Web 2.0 as the magical solution to customer needs.
The truth is, the web is just the web. We simply use the term Web 2.0 to communicate that we're doing something "new", or that we've found new ways of doing something old.
Jefferey Zeldman wrote a great article over at A List Apart that sums up my thoughts on the subject, he hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

I hope the term Web 3.0 doesn't catch on, and we can call embrace the fact that the internet, being organic, global, and growing as fast as it is, will continue to grow and spawn new ideas every day, everywhere.
Let's just call it the web.
Adrian Gill - Technically I have the most affinity for the answer provided by Derek Sedlack.
I would however like to offer an answer from a different perspective.
For me Web 3 Beta can be seen in Google Earth as a platform, with full search engine capability but now not only profile specific in what it kicks out but location specific as well. True meaning to search results and to data being stored can begin to be derived by adding location, physical location, into the mix. Now I do not need to search for a hotel in some city somewhere... but I can search for one within a mile of the airport or an office address, map out routes for my GPS to and from and locate restaurant etc. Add to this ratings on all vendors found by my searches, photos and so much more and my whole trip can be pre planned and predicted even.
This I think is the root/seed of Web 3
Clarification Added:
Think of Linked in combined with Google, Gmail, Travel web sites, Amazon, Best Buy etc all driven of Location specific Google Earth points.
Martijn Stegink - Web 3.0 is said to be semantic and therefore easier for humans to use in their natural way. This concept however is just extending the line of development that has been in the past.
I believe however that Web 3.0 will be much more focused on transparent user experience where you do not use a series of separate web applications anymore but it rather becomes something you do.
Feyzi Bagirov - Data tagging is one of the features.
Neelima Salvi - Hi Keith
Web 2.0 is nothing but an experience how to use the web. Web is becoming more innovative and evolutionary everyday. According to me, Web 3.0 is an absolute crap. People are just putting versions of the web experience. No wonder we start discussing what is web 4.0. I wonder if we can get down making money business out of this trend. What we designers design for and how the users use it is totally a different story.
Finnur Magnusson - I don't
Charles Cirronella -
Web 3.0 refers to the semantic web. I used the term in a recent presentation on ecommerce. The slide was as follows:
Past
- Mainframes w/dumb terminals – Legacy
- Client/Server – Legacy w/Fat Client
- Web 1.0: HTTP Stateless – Legacy Web w/Thin Client
Current
- Web 2.0: RIA (Rich Internet Applications)
Future
- Web 3.0: Semantic Web
Mark Nelson - Web 3.0 will probably be the move to mobile devices.
Usable information via web enabled mobile devices is becoming more and more prevalent. You can get news, weather, sports, social connections and all sorts of info right to your cell phone. You can even check out job listings -
http://jobmob.mobi
Disclaimer: I own and operate http://jobmob.mobi. Naturally, I think web 3.0 is going to mobile!
Mark Nelson
http://jobmob.mobi - mobile web
http://www.jobmob.biz - "regular" web
David Hamill - Web 3.0 will be used by people who want to mystify their lack of understanding with distracting terms that mean nothing. It won't have a definition because like Web 2.0 it will not exist.
